Newbie Questions

Hi! I've been keeping bettas since I was pretty young, like six. However, I always kept them in tanks less than 3 gallons. I decided to start up the hobby again, so I did some research. I now have Lucas, my veiltail, in a 10-gallon tank. Okay so here are my questions.

His tank temperature is about 78-80 degrees. Is that too hot?

I've only had him for about a week, and I moved him into the 10-gal about four days ago. He has a filter, a heater, and some plants, but I haven't gotten his substrate yet. He sometimes hangs out behind his filter and flares. He can't see his reflection, is he just getting used to the new tank?

How many treats can I give him a day? He loves bloodworms, mysis, and daphnia, and I've been training him to jump up for a treat. Will he stop eating if he's not hungry? I know over-feeding can kill them.

Sorry for so much text! I think I'll upload a picture of his finished tank once it's finished. Thanks so much!

78-80 is fine.

Flaring is perfectly normal, so is hanging out by the filter - just make sure the current isn't strong enough to damage his fins

It's best to restrict treats to a couple of times a week. You can use his regular feeding to train him - they will do tricks for pellets!

Bettas won't stop eating when they aren't hungry, but it is pretty difficult to overfeed him enough to kill as long as you use quality food. The problem is more dealing with the excess waste in the tank.

That said, it's not the best thing to overfeed. Be careful his stomach doesn't get bloated. If it does, fast him for a couple of days until it goes down.
