Does deco soil (the ball things you put in bamboo pots) really absorb ammonia?

I have 2 lucky bamboo plants and decosoil, which are little chemical-free balls that grow in water and you can grow plants in them. But I have a little too much so it overflows its vase sometimes. I heard that they arsorb ammonia from the water if you use them for a fish tank, which is probably true because one time my dad put food coloring in the water and they absorbed that. (the food coloring came out tho. all you have to do is shrink them by leaving them out of the water for a few days) So did anyone try this before? And does it work?
