Rescue betta! :D

So I went to Petsmart today and looked through their many new males! I haven't had a VT since I can remember.. so I was set on getting a VT :) There were a lot of beautiful boys! Purples, marbles, multi-colored! I had a few picked out that I had my heart set on and had to pick one

So I picked the one that looked like he needed the most love. He's also probably the one out of the whole selection with the worst fins!! Curls everywhere!

How do I treat curling? I'm guessing it's from ammonia poisoning >< Will it heal and get back to normal? I picked up a gallon kritter keeper to heal him in. It's heated and salted. Anything else? (I'm not in to medications)

I saw one EXACLTY like that when I rescued my guy today, but he wasn't curling.
I think it might improve, it could be from being in a cup, and his fins dragging the bottom a lot, or something.
Good deal, he is stunningly handsome.

He's beautiful! Usually curling is permanent but I have a VT who had major fin curling and it's a little better because his fins grew a lot longer. ChristinaRoss (I miss her wonderful advice!!) mentioned some things that can help with it, like putting them in direct sunlight and it's supposed to help. Just keep his water clean and warm and add some aquarium salt to the tank.

its probably a very dumb idea but how about cutting the curls off? i read somewhere that some fish get their fins trimmed so maybe its possible....

My betta, when my little brother got him, had horrible curling fins. The ventral and part of his dorsal fin were actually shaped like corkscrews. They've improved, and straightened out when he had fin rot and I did two 100 precent water changes daily water changes, but there is still a portion that refuses to straighten out. His tail was so scrunched, it was really sad, but now it's almost perfect. ^^

I'm no expert, but a lot of fresh water seemed to do the trick. Sunlight might as well, becuase now that I think about it, his tank is in a very well lit spot (but not in direct sunlight), and there is a lamp over his tank, that stays lit late into the night.

Kaisa: that sounds possible, but I don't know if it could safely be done without stressing out the fish a lot, or hurting him.

Jenny: I usually just let the name "come" to me naturally! I must admit... I'm a huge stickler about my betta having cute faces, and this one doesn't really.. But it's okay ^^ He's growing on me nevertheless! Strangely, at Petsmart, his cup was the ONLY one without that blue stuff in it D:

BettaxFish: I've never actually thought about putting him in direct sunlight! I'll try that once he gets better :) I want to get rid of the finrot first. About how long does it take for finrot to heal?

Kaisa: I've heard about trimming as well. I don't really mind the curling tho and knowing me it'd go drastically wrong :[

JKfish: Sine he looks rather young, I'm assuming his fins will keep growing :) I think he's a "returned" fish since his cup was the only cup with clear instead of blue water >:[ I'll try the frequent water changes! That sounds promising.

My VT had curling on his top fin; I've had him maybe 10 weeks now and it's slowly uncurling. I read it was becasue they were so used to be in small containers that they couldn't form properly. Give him plenty of clean water, nice conditions and you'll see him improve. He's lovely :)

Since fins are already fragile, the new fins coming in are even more fragile. Meaning, if he over flares or moves very fast, he could rip the new fins. It can take months until you see some new growth so be patient. It also depends on how bad the fin rot is.
