Byron from the other forum informed me about the sand, I do rake it with my fingers not every day but every water change, which is every week. The only time I smell anythin is if I take out the plants to re-arrange. Im assuming this is bad lol I was going to get trumpet snails but I know snails multiply and also add to the bioload

Since you are no longer going to do the plants you may want to go back to gravel...just a thought......(rotten egg smell)anaerobic spot can be deadly especially in small tanks......and so true about the snails.......they can get out of hand pretty fast....lol.....

Will that show up when I test the water? I wouldnt mind baby apple snails but the trumpet snails just look like hitchhikers lol

No test for it that I know of anyway, but the ammonia could be a sign......the apple snail don't burrow like the trumpets so they won't do the same thing.......
