It's fine. But if you feel it has gone too extreme you can add more plants and give him something else to do.

I agree adding more plants or decorations would give him something else to focus on. I also keep a couple of spares around and every couple of months will put the spares in my tank and keep the older ones as spares. I also will rotate decorations between my 3 tanks (cleaning them before moving them to a different tank). This gives my bettas something new to focus on for a little while.
