At any rate, eventually her fins would get longer/grow out if she was a male. :D

If she bred with a male then she's definitely a female (even if the spawning was unsuccessful). Fish work off of pheromones, basically the "smell" each other to decide if one is a male/female.

From what I've read (after the last "is he a she?" thread ) some females do have beards but they are smaller and less pronounced than males. I know that my female, Nancy, has a small beard but she is most definitely a she (she's really FULL of eggs right now).
