HELP: weird behavior then death

The betta (Promethus) my kids bought for my birthday two months ago died yesterday. He has been fine and was acting normally until yesterday. We were heading out the door and I noticed he was darting frantically all over the tank and then nose diving to the bottom. Within a few minutes he was dead.

I have owned numerous betta and have never seen this behavior before. I have no idea what happened. HE was fine one minute then he went crazy and died. It looked as if he was grasping for air, darting around everywhere trying to breathe and then he died. It was so weird.

Have any of you experience something like this before? My kids really want to get Promethus II, but I don't want to until we have discovered the problem. The tank was cleaned over a week ago (and de-chlorinated) and he was find until yesterday. It came on all of a sudden.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about your Betta, I have a few question...
How big was the tank, filtration, live plants, water temp, additives used besides the dechloranator, how much and how often on the water changes, the last water changes per your post was over a week ago, correct? and you had him for 2 months.
