Is it always the owner's fault? (Lost another one)

I came home to find my betta dead. My nitrates are great, my ammonia is zero, the tank is going good, and I just can't figure out what happened with him... One of my moneywarts is melting a little and there are some white fuzzy fungus type stuff on the leaves (its removed from the tank now, going back to petsmart with the other one) so maybe the plant's rotting got to him... I don't know, its driving me crazy.

I may just stick to Java Fern, Crypt Parva, and Scarlet Ludwigia since those are the ones flourishing in my tank right now, and the moneywart is just dying...

Oh no! That's terrible!

And odd... Though I don't use real plants so I have no idea what's going on...

Are you sure there isn't anything funny in your tap water?

We have pretty safe tap water, the tank is cycling but I added him at a good time (after ammonia spikes and goes to zero) but he wasn't a very lively fish, he kidna drifted around the tank, not like Goku who was always doin something. I dunno. I'm taking my water sample to the tropical fish store (they use API master kits) so maybe they will find something.

I'm so sorry :(
I've had about 2 unknown deaths... sometimes they just happen, but that's life. It's not always the owner's fault
