Unfortunately I don't know of a battery operated heater.. Perhaps you can get a device that works like a portable outlet? There are a lot of devices like this, that you charge by plugging in, then it becomes portable--it's more for plugging in mobile devices and such, but you should be able to find something like that fairly cheap ~30$ maybe? Not sure on the battery life though--there's no way you can move him closer to an outlet?

you can grab a 2.5 Gallon at petco for $13. You COULD get a 10G at petco for only $10 but idk if that's too big for a preschool. (at petsmart they have a 10G with a filter and hood for$30) But try to get atleast a 2.5G. and i don't think there's ever been a battery powered heater for aquariums that is submersible/safe. you can take a chance using a hydor mini heater or a tetra whisper 2-15Gallon heater (both just about $15). There are alot of cases where the hydor overheats the water and the tetra doesn't heat the water much at all. I've tried both, the hydor definately heats the water, but sometimes heats it too much. The tetra i bought stopped heating at 76 degrees, and began heating again at 72 degrees. Betta's need temps from 78-84 degrees.
