Tell me step-by-step how you are doing the nitrate test and double check and make sure it is nitrAte- should be two bottles of reagent that you are using.... and not nitrite.

It is definately Nitrate. I just re-tested the 4Gallon, this is what I did. Added 10 drops of Nitrate#1 to 5ml of tank water> capped it and mixed it > Shook the Nitrate#2> added 10 drops to 5ml of tank water >capped it and mixed, I have waited for 5 mins and the results are

5.0pmm

I decided to test my 12 gallon since I had the kit out and the results are the same :) and the 12 gallon has been setup for 4 months. Is this better? lol

Great, so now you are showing 5ppm Nitrate...that is what you want...often the #2 reagent bottle will settle really bad and needs lots of shaking/mixing/banging...lol...to get it properly mixed etc....to get an accurate reading on nitrates....good job...
