Do you need a filter in the breeding tank?

I don't use any filtration in my spawning tank, but I do keep lots of live plants in them. I don't use filtration on the fry tank either, I use live plants and daily water changes.
If you do use filtration, I would use a sponge filter as Dead Sunlight suggested.

I don't have a filter on my spawning tanks either. IMO you need to do daily water changes any way because fry emit a hormone that stunts the growth of their siblings which can not be subdued unless you do water changes. Even if you have a filter you should still do daily water changes.
