FishSticks: Lazy or ill?

Symptoms:

Is not active. lies at the bottom and comes up only for air, or stay at the surface in a corner.
Darts around and purposely runs into anything he can (gravel, rocks, etc) in an effort to scratch itself.

Got some question...
Can you see anything on him, like ich, velvet or wounds etc....

How big is the tank, how much and how often are the water changes and when was the last one, additives used, filtration, live plants, water temp, how long have you had him and the set-up, any treatments tried?

He could be itching due to ammonia burns and/or heavy metals, I would start by making daily 100% water changes.
Are you using a water conditioner or dechlorinator?

Sometimes the bottled water can be filtered tap water and still contain chlorine and chloramine and use of a dechlorinator would still be needed

It also can lack the needed minerals for good health from the filtering process, I would use 50/50 bottled/tap or get a supplement and dechlorinator

In the small bowl that are 1g or less-the ammonia can build fast and daily to every-other day 100% water changes are needed to prevent health and fin issues.
