Absolutely! My betta will start nipping its own fins and overall become depressed in anything less than a 5 gallon :P

yes, bettas can do well in that much water and actually thrive. They can also handle much more water. most people are just ill informed about this (no offence to your friend)

5 gallons is a great size for a betta.
