Help me!!! The nitrogen cycle

Hi guys, I just got a betta, and im keeping him in a .5gal tank, i am going to upgrade to around 2.5-5 gallon because i am aware they need a spacious place to live. How do you set up the tank? make the bacteria grow and stuff? why is it needed? can someone give me step by step instructions on how to set up the tank?? PLEASE

Freshwater aquarium cycle... HELP

Once the cycle is complete, do u do a 100% water change?? and if you do, then what is the whole point of doing the cycle since the water is gone now?

When a tank is cycled, you never do a 100% water change. It depends on what your nitrate readings are. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

You never do a 100% water change after the tank is cycled, that would be a complete waste of a month

The only time you change the water during a cycle IMO is if you are doing a fish in cycle. Or like dramaqueen said, when the cycle is complete and the nitrate readings are high, then you should do between a 30-50% water change before adding the fish and the fish should be added gradually to prevent a mini cycle.

Do you have a test kit? if not I would recommend the API freshwater master kit, this gives more of an accurate reading than the strips.
