The acclimation method described by Lion mom is a great method and how it should be done IMO/E.
Often the pH and/or nitrate levels can be different from betta cup to your tank water and that sudden change can be stressful.
You want to acclimate to more than just water temp-which is also important but pH and nitrate are even more important.
Also, you don't want to add any of the pet shop/betta cup water to your tank.
You have a beautiful Betta by the way......

I don't know, Ajones. IMO/E, sudden change in water can be every bit as stressful (if not more so) than sudden change in temps.

Heck, I even do water acclimation when I am just moving a fish from one tank to another & they all have the same water source!

Mildly off topic... I don't know the actual function behind oak leaves (Other then they're found in thier natural environment), but would placing some in the new tank with him help him livin up?

The tannins from oak leaf is good and I swear by them...although not from their natural habitat they contain 99% of the same chemical compounds that the IAL have that are in their natural habitat that they haven't seen...lol....since they are domesticated and farm raised now...lol....

Wow I didn't even think about that. I'll definitely start introducing my fish that way from now on.

He is a very pretty boy, congratulations on the find (especially at Petco). I think that it could maybe be a combination of acclimating to the new place and perhaps healing from the dirty cup water he was in at the store. That's a lot of ammonia in a tiny space, and they have to sit in it... poor things. =(

I'm actually ordering a IAL extract that's clear from that IBC website. It looks like it's a pretty good thing and I hope it gets here soon.

Clicky.
