New Betta

Hi just bought a betta today- haven't named him yet but I am very excited (and so was he when he saw his new tank.) My question is that I have a planted tank, and I'm sort of worried that he's going to get caught under some of the heavier vegitation and drown. He seems to like that area most of all but I was wondering if I should thin it out so he has more direct access to the surface? Has anyone had that kind of thing happen?
