Exclamation clamped fins? lethargic?

hi!
i was recently away for 24 hours and left my betta in his 2.5 gallon, unfiltered, heated tank (his 10 gallon is currently cycling).

when i came back his water temp was a little too high (85!)
this wasn't a result of the heater (that shuts off after 78)...i guess the a/c was left off..
his fins were clamped together and he was acting rather lethargic...
when i fed him his pellets he became active again and even jumped a little to get them :)

after feeding, he went back to being lethargic. his fins are still clamped and he spends most of his time on the bottom of his tank...

i've lowered his water level so that he can get up to breathe a lot easier.. and i brought the water temp back down to a reasonable level (78)....
I changed his water, and he is displaying no other signs of physical illness other than the fins and the fact that he's a little paler.
he still is acting sick....
what should i do :(?

Wow, sounds like the same symptoms that my fish had. Ammonia build up. Need a water change or add some conditioner to get rid of ammonia. Unfortunately my fish died because my test strips didn't indicate an ammonia spike, so I treated him for a bacterial infection. I'm no longer using the test strips, but the indicator vials for testing water more accurately. Are there live plants in his tank?

Thanks!
I did a complete water change and tested the ammonia to make sure it was at zero.
He's a lot more active now and his fins are starting to spread out a bit more!
