I've got alot of those heaters and alot of the more expensive adjustable ones,
Ive had a few defective ones of both types, )kinda expect that with most everything you buy these days anyways),,
For smaller tanks I personally wouldn't recommend the adjustable one, the preset ones as shown in your pic is better.
With the adjustable ones IF your temp happens to rises or falls to much in your home and your not there to catch it and re-adjust the heater, You could end up with a very cooked fish... (Had that happen a few times on me in a couple 10 gallons, all it took was a few short hours.)

I have the same heater and it does heat the tank to 78...sucks that it can't go higher but I have bought different heaters for my other tanks. My most recent is shatter proof, learned that the hard way :p
