tank temperature

i have this thermometer, with a light that heats up the tank, and it is 86.2 degrees in my room. in my betta fish tank, i have a temp. reading of around 87 degrees i believe, out and above the yellow zone, i think which is for tropical fish. i'm thinking this is not good, and i need a different type of bulb... any ideas/suggestions?

thanks!

If it is a CONSTANT 86 degrees in the room I don't quite see the need for a heater... Just get a regular glass thermometer that goes inside of the tank to monitor the temp and if the room gets too cold for winter you can add in that heater you bought. :)

Edit: What kind of thermometer/heater is this?

i don't have a heater, but isn't a reading of the water temp. around 87 a little too high?

"i have this thermometer, with a light that heats up the tank"

I am so confused. 87 seems high to ME, I consider 86 degrees long-term unsafe but some people claim to have 86 degree tanks with no problem. Someone else could clarify this.
