Angry Everyones contradicting eachother Dx!

I have had my Betta Fish, Blue, for about 6 months now :3 We are a happily married couple...jking xD But seriously, why is it that those who are supposed to know about animals never actually do...? I`m talking about pet shop workers of course...I had set my mind on getting Neons to put in my 5 gallon fish tank with Blue, but the man said you can`t put them with Betta fish...

So now im really unsure as to which companions I could put in with Blue...because I dont want him to be lonely in such a big aquarium ;.; Plz help meee!!!~

&& I had found a list of fish you could possibly put in with a Betta Fish but according to others, you can`t...so im really confused as to what I should do right now Dx

Some people might be contradicting due to their own personal experiences! Some bettas will get along with anything, even the fancy guppies that look sort of like tiny male bettas..others attack and harass frogs and snails even!!

But your betta won't be lonely in his tank! They aren't especially social, most of the joy of having more fish is for our own sake, really! It's fun to watch them swim together, but I'm pretty sure you can't fit too much in a five gallon tank anyway?

How many neons?If it was a ten gallon I would say go for it but a 5 gallon I am not sure I have never had other fish with my bettas so I don't know alot about it.Oh and half the time people at petstores don't know anything about bettas they think they have to live alone in 1/2 gallon tanks I had someone tell me bettas "thrive off of the dirty water".

I keep a couple ghost shrimp in my 5gal with Nettlestung, and he's harassed them once or twice but generally leaves them alone. They're great for picking out debris from the gravel, and are also super cool to watch as well.. though it really depends on your betta's personality.

Very true! And it doesn't help that it is often STORE POLICY to say such things like to buy little betta bowls---They make tons of money off of the cute betta containers that they can over price because it is 'art'(even if the poor fish will be swimming in filth)! I know someone who got fired because she refused to let people buy a certain (dangerous) substrate for reptiles. It was usually their big money maker, and she changed that..She got booted!

Anything exotic, including fish, don't trust a petstore employee. There are exceptions(and they rock!) but the rule of thumb is.. Most people going to work there like animals, but probably don't research them. A lot of them maybe just like dogs! They are taught what to say by the higher ups, learn it, memorize it, and say it to every customer. That's why when buying something that requires specific care...always always ALWAYS second guess what you are told, do your own research, and find people who have experience! :O That's how I found this forum! :) And I can see that's why you're here too!

Not many xD I Looked it up and found a chart where it said that in a 5 gallon tank, you could put at least 2 Neons. If more, then it would be an overcrowded tank Dx && that it could make the fishies sick ;.;

+1
Chain petstores dont care much about the actual fish. They make theyre money off of the supplies and tanks. They will promote their products even if they are not the best or are unnecesary.
And youve definately come to the right place for info.

Well I work at a local petsmart as a petcare specialist, and most of us understand what to put with what fish. There are a few people that just do not know much about the fish or animals who are in a different department and sometimes just have to work in the petcare department. It depends, but they definatly do not tell us what to say to customers and make us repeat it to each person. They allow us to look through the books we sell and give out that information, or what we have experienced with our animals at home. Usually, petsmart will not higher someone who has not delt with caring for pets, but it does happen. So maybe they will not know as much, and will just say something that is completly wrong. I'm not really sure, but I was just pointing out how I see it at my local petsmart where I work :]

Neons are schooling fish, Putting just two together would be unfair to them.

From my experiance neons prefer to be in with at least 10 of their own.

I agree with Karl. 5g is too small for a shoal of neons. You could try ghost shrimp or a mystery snail. A snail would be fine and ghost shrimp are so cheap that if your betta decides to turn on them, they're nothing more than a cheap tasty snack.
