Do you really need a water test kit though? I feel like it's a bit over the top. I mean fish survive in lakes and they are exposed to anything. I guess thats why they say animals in captivity can never go back.

Yes, you do need one. you could probably wing it and not use one, I guess, but they've actually saved my fish twice now. Especially since you live (looking at your little tag) in NYC, I would definitely condition and test the water before using it.

Just in case of a total ammonia overload I feel a bit more comfortable using the test kit.
