Housing Males and Females?

If I get a 10 gallon, can I divide it and safely house a male on one side and a female on the other without constent stress on the female from being ready to spawn?

Yes you can do so.. But You will need plants by the divider to help lower the visability between both fish, as this can help with stress. And I recommend having a filter on both sides of the divider, and possibly have a heater on both sides as well if the one heater cannot heat a 10 gallon tank.

Thanks for your answer, but I think that I am going to divide it into 3 sections (so about 3 gals per fishy) and put all the males in there, and give the female back her 5 gal she had to herself for so long :) I do have a filter that is well baffled but that will easily filter the whole tank + I have live plants as well. But I do have another question:
With the tank came an older Thermal Compact 100 Watt heater. Its not adjustable. Is this heater going to be to hot for a 10 gallon? Here are a couple pictures:

Weird, they show fine on my computer. No it doesn't, but the previous owners said it kept the tank at around 80 degrees

Then that will be fine... But you should measure the temp just to be sure.
