You might want to run them in tandem for a while, maybe a week or two, and hope that BB establishes itself in the sponge filter more quickly than it would if you just took out the old one.

If i can i will, unfortunately the old filter doesn't always like to run, which is why i need to replace it... no worries though, i have plenty of tanks to take seeded media from..
