Yep, if the rhizome is buried in the substrate, it will eventually rot and the plant will die. All you have to do to attach it to driftwood etc. is simply just use fishing line. In my goldfish tank I just wedged most of it between rocks and where the wood branches off and it stays there pretty good even with the occasional 'goldfish attack'.
