Cycle Question

Hi i was using Tetra Safe start for almost 2 weeks now right after day 2
I get ammonia readings and Nitrate 20mg/l not
"nitrite"

after a week and a Half my nitrate reading goes to 40mg/l is it possible to skip the part where theres a big jump in nitrite reading?

i got about 4 plants in a 4 fish 5 gallon aquarium w/ a filter on it

and any idea how to clear out the water seemslike when i open the light at night i see alot of tiny floating particles in the water i don't want w/o increasing the filter flow?

It sounds like your nitrates are a bit high, especially if you have fish in there. Give your tank a bit longer to cycle (but keep up with water changes), and maybe it will straighten out.

What is your water's ph?

because you have a water tester, test daily. If ammonia or nitrites get above .25 ppm you're going to want to do a 25% water change.

From what I've heard, extremely low ph and sometimes very high ph can inhibit the growth of the benificial bacteria, but your ph sounds good.

thats why i wont use that tetrasafestart... i used it once and it had my nitrites way up while there were nitrates and ammonia... i was pretty stressed and eventually it all worked itself out.. but it just seems better to have one come after the other to me. i still worry about that tank lol

phew atlast today the parameter showed my tank is already cycled. I rushed to a pet store to have my water checked for the second time just to make sure.

after 2 1/2 week from the time i poured the tetra safe start.
