Homemade Driftwood

I've been doing some research on using homemade driftwood. Basically, use hardwood, clean it really well, boil it, debark it...

Has anyone used pieces of found wood? Any experience? Suggestions? Things to watch for? I really like the look of "stringier" driftwood (looks more like branches rather than a clump of a root), but don't really want to spend the money on it.

I would be hesitant to use hardwood from my back yard. You have to be very careful with stuff like that. I wouldn't depend on boiling to kill all the insects.

I have heard of some type of coating that you can use (fish safe) to protect against rotting, bugs, cracking, etc. You don't even need to debark it. I don't remember what it is but I think I read about it in aquariums for dummies.

I collect an use native found wood and have yet have any problems......fish don't live/thrive in sterile environment after all..... and as long as the hardwood is free of pesticide they are safe to use-some may have a fungal growth in the beginning but it is usually harmless to fish/livestock-a good scrubbing, soaking and removal of the bark is all that is needed-this is what the retailer does after all so why can't the hobbyist do it too.....
