Question Cooling down water?

K so I'm (hopefully) going to be getting a 10 gallon fish tank for Christmas. I'll be putting my Betta in with some Albino cory cats. The preferable temperature in that kind of thank is around 79 degrees, I know, but I don't have a heater since the temperature of my water is 86 degrees /= is there any way to cool down the water? I can't really change the room temperature because I'm not supposed to be running the AC all the time (I live in an old house with an AC in the window...) Do heaters cool down the water? Is any equipment sold that cools down the water? Thanks.

If you have a filter, lower the level of the water so when the water comes out of the filter intake it splashes a lot. This will airate and cool the water down slightly.

If you have indescantsent (sp?) light bulbs, investing in some fluorescent lights over the tank will help seeing as they give off little heat, are brighter and last longer. :)

I know...goodness...I would turn into a roast.

You can also float a bit of ice around as a really quick solution, but moniter the temerature so that it doesn't drop too dramatically.

If you do ice, make sure it is dechlorinated water or tank water, not tap :)

OH ya I was thinking about this today....I bought a tall non moving fan thing for up to 800 sq ft for $80 (it's like 5 ft)....but they make smaller ones for smaller spaces...Look on Amazon.com....They have auto shut off & everything...Maybe set one in the room the tank is in?

They make "chillers" for tanks, but they are expensive & I think meant for ponds.
I'd ask the the general freshwater forum, the goldfish people might have advice,
those are cool water fish.
