Sand for betta tank?

What does "capping" mean when referring to sand on top of gravel or soil? (We didn't know you could/should/would mix subtrate types.)

WWITB: I wouldn't do anything more than an inch or two, but that's just me.

FishyWishy: Capping is just adding a layer of substrate on top of another. :) and yes, you can mix substrates if you want. Many planted tanks have special plant substrate on the bottom with a cap of some pretty gravel or sand on top, sort of like in nature, where there are different layers of substrate in rivers.

Cap means to put on top-you cap soil with sand to keep it from floating

You don't cap gravel with sand-they mix and can make a mess
