So, Quasimodo is my new fish I adopted from my sister who "rescued" him from Wal-Mart (I already gave her that lecture). She had him for a month or two and he improved greatly. This poor little guy has been though a lot! He had pop eye at one point, hence the white ring around his eye. Before I got him, his fins started to curl at the ends. He's in a 2.5 gallon tank with a live plant (Java Fern) and two fakes. He has salt and Bettafix in his tank as well as a filter (cartridge removed due to meds). He's a very dark little fish and I only noticed a red spot on each of his gill flaps (perculum?) when I was taking pictures with flash to show my sister how he was doing. My sister has another betta, which, surprisingly enough, was very healthy when she bought him. Compared to her fish, mine seems to behave relatively normally; he swims around and his swimming has improved, but is not as energetic as her fish.
He eats well, though I cannot tell if he's resting more than he should be. He's never had a current before and I wonder if the Whisper 1-3 is just more than he's used to and he'll be fine in another week or two or if this thing on his gills is starting to make him lethargic at times. He's not gasping or anything. He moves around alright. I'll be monitoring his behaviour to see if he's just lazy or being affected by the Thing or the filter.
He's been in this tank for a week and I am going to do a 50% water change today even thought I tested his parameters and they were fine. I know I overfeed him (the flakes fall out of the bottle even when I don't completely remove the cap) and I'm going to try to fix that.
So, what might this red spot be? Will his tail uncurl? What can I do to bring out his color?
