I'm kind of interupting the question asked, but... What is an airstone? I've been thinking of getting one.

You hook them up to an air pump with airline tubing, and they create bubbles, which adds oxygen to the water.

Okay. Are they just called stones because the little air tube goes into a stone and the bubbles comme out of the stone?

It isn't an actual stone. They are usually blue and have lots of tiny holes. You can't use just any stone.

We have one that's like 20 years old and it's very quiet as long as it's on carpet or something soft - it just vibrates. I imagine they've only gotten quieter over the years.

The pump isn't loud, but putting it on a washcloth helps if yours turns out to be loud.
