A "Singapore" Themed Tank

I just got a big 14G tank for Christmas and I'm super excited to have a livable habitat for Heroman! Now, I've ALWAYS wanted a tank decked out with Mediterranean style runes and such (I want the Parthenon!) however a new idea just popped into my head a little earlier.
If you've seen Pirates of the Caribbean 3, you might know about the scene where the pirates are wading around in the waters of Singapore (pics below for reference). This has really caught my attention and I would LOVE to have a tank themed this way, but honestly I don't have a clue how I'm going to do that....

So here come the questions:

1. Can I build a "pier" out of wood and not have it hurt his fins?
2. How should I plant it so it has that cool feeling like the movie has?
3. Would it be best for me to just try to build it all myself?
4. Is this idea too crazy to work?????

Notes: I don't plan on making it murky and dirty or disgusting lol. I also only plan on filling it up about two thirds of the way. I think IF I do it right, I can somehow lead the water from the filter into a sort of water powered mill like thing. I would want to be able to have the most surface area possible by hovering my "city" above the water.

Please tell me if I'm crazy.

I like the idea, and love the movie! There is a "tiki" hut from petsmart which may fit in, I'll post the link for ya. I would assume dark gravel, maybe not black but various colors of brown. I'm not any help for real plants but hope this helps a little! Good luck, I think it'd look awesome! :)
