You can get a small internal filter and those work great for small betta tanks. And from my experience if you have a filter on a small about 2 or 3 gallon tank its good to change 50% of the water every week.

What kind of filter? I don't even use a filter because the current pushes your betta around . I keep my males in 2.5 gallons divided/5 gallons and 10 divided for males and for breeding.

My females were in a 29 but I just picked up the 20 gallons package from petco for $40....they live'n very comfortably!!!

External filter's are easily baffled to reduce the current and most of my betta are kept that way. But I do have one sponge filter thats really nice but they tend to need more maintenance.

Having a filter doesnt mean you can do less water changes right now, because your filter likely isnt cycled.

I'm still a newbie, so this is just a question...

Do you really recommend 100% water changes? I'd read that changing too much water at one time stresses the fish...? maybe 50-80% instead?

Bad water conditions will stress them more. Bettas are brave fish who tolerate being netted well... as long as you are matching the temperature and pH of the new water to that of the old, there should be no problem. Breeders change the water in their fry tanks daily with no consequences to health.
