Does your fish have any history of being ill? No
How old is your fish (approximately)? about 2-3 weeks.

I got my fish about 2 weeks ago. I placed him in 1.5 gallon tank a day after cleaning it. He was happy until 2 days ago. I had to add more water because it was evaporating due to the heater. He started swimming on his side and mostly staying behind the filter. He is responsive to motion and will swim away if you come near the tank. However, he remains still when there is no motion. Any help or advice is much appreciated.

It sounds like he has swim bladder disorder. SBD happens if the fish isnt fasted or is over fed. Something is internally blocking his system. My idea on a treatment is to raise the temprature to 82* maybe and stop feeding him immediatly. Also you can use epsom salt, not aquariums salt because that will kill him if he does have SBD, but epson at 2 tsp/gallon should help him. Also tannins might help. Thats my best idea. Hope he gets better soon :)
