oh no, i think i've got a tail biter..

I bought him a couple days ago, and noticed a huge chunk missing from his tail. i assumed it was just his tail, but everyone else says he did it himself. Ive now noticed 3 more bits missing, two on his dorsal and one on his anal. they coculd have been there, but i didnt notice it. Im quite confused now, if he IS doing this to himself, is there a way i could get him to stop?

You can see 2 nicks in this one, the HUGE one on his caudal fin, and the tiny one on his anal fin. its on the side closest to the caudal. Could it have been him?

He might have been tail biting before, as a reaction to stress. Keep an eye on him, and if you notice more bites or shredded fins, give him 1 tsp of salt per gallon, with small water changes daily. Even if by ten days it isn't better, you'll have to remove all the salt for a while, too much salt for too long can cause organ failure. If he continues to bite, try slowly adjusting different things. Some bettas bite when bored, others because of too much water turbulence due to a filter, some when stressed etc.
