Sponge baffle question

I am currently fixing up Cleos tank while he is in his QT.( got ripped off on a plant a petco today lol!) and I want to sponge baffle the filter. My question is, is there a certain type of sponge that should be avoided? I forgot to look for "aquarium sponge" while at petco and it is pretty far from my house. will I be able to find something that will work at walmart or a grocery store?

I used a kitchen sponge before(never been used) but I took it off because it didnt filter up little particles floating around and I went back to the water bottle method
