cycling help

so i had my tank with a piece of shrimp in there for cycling it. i kept it in there for a little over a week and took it out. then i did water changes til the ammonia came down. i tested it and all i saw was 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites all the time but nitrates were like 80 ppm and after the water changes i got that number down to 20 or so. so ive been testing my water every other day about and ammonia/nitrites are at zero and nitrates at like 20 and ph at near 8 i guess. just wondering if my tank is cycled. how will i know if it's not cycled? my fish seems to be doing great in it, he swims around like crazy.

In the book I read they said that when the tank is cycled the ammonia and nitrites will go down to 0 and the Nitrates go up. Then they, the nitrates, can be removed with water changes.

So it sounds to me like your tank is cycled. But lets hear from someone with experience.

Definitely sounds cycled. Congrats. :) You had a quick cycle!

Keep testing ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates (as you are) just to be sure everything is staying balanced.
