Question Tiny holes in the bottom fin...

Hello all!

This is my third betta, I just got him on Saturday. He was in pretty dirty water with lotsa floaters @ the pet store but was beautiful and very spirited. I decided to take him. I added him to my ten gallon tank that still had some water in in from when my last fish passed away many months ago. I cleaned the top where the water evaporated and added new, fresh treated water & heated it up to the right temp.

He has been swimming around but seeming a little lethargic & uninterested in food. From what I have read in another thread the bettas need time to adjust & will not eat right away. I understand that but today I looked closer at my little buddy in the light of day & realized that he had little holes in his bottom fin, pin hole sized. It is not severe but concerning. What do I do? Is this fin rot or something else?

Since he sounds like he came from bad conditions when you got him I suspect that is the root of the problem...but then you placed him in a 10gal tank that had been sitting with water for several months after a fish death...kinda going from the frying pan to the fire thing......what you could do now is start a 50% daily water change on the 10g for the next 5 days with a couple of deep vacuuming and get the filter cleaned out and running to get the nitrogen cycle going....or.....

What you really should do is QT this fish, empty the 10gal and re-start the 10g fresh and clean and do a fish-in cycle....its safe and not hard to do especially in a 10gal with 1 fish......get the filter going and do twice weekly 50% water changes and with one of the twice weekly vacuum the substrate good- until you get nitrate reading of at least 5ppm and then- water changes of 50% weekly with substrate vacuuming should maintain water quality...

Once you get the Betta in quality water and improved nutrition the fin issue should resolve.....

I would definitely get him out of that tank ASAP, there is no telling what kind of yucky stuff grew and developed in there :(

Thank you

Your suggestions have helped immensely, I see the error in putting him into water that had been sitting for quite a while. I will probably go with your 2nd suggestion & QT him to clean the 10gal and get the filter going.

Thank you, I need all the help I can get...it take a while to learn but the learning lasts!

The old, original water from the first fish.

Thx! Actually, I do have a question, how does one "vacuum the substrate"? Is that with an object that you purchase at the pet store?

I QT'd my betta this morning into fresh, treated water in a smaller tank I had around and he seems more energetic, swimming more. I have to work on the 10 gal, on saturday...
