I wouldn't say that oscars are very messy fish. I've kept one for 8 years now and not once have i seen the tank get as dirty as my goldfish's tank. Oh and a 55 gallon is a bit small for even one oscar once it is fully grown I would suggest something like 65 gallons or larger.

And about breeding, you can't tell a difference between the genders until they pair off to breed.

i know this KNOW lol. i used to think it was something to do with the fins or sumthing like that lol.
