I undestand the urge to breed petstore bettas when you have fish you really like, I've been there myself.
When I started learning about breeding and realized all the work/expense involved I didn't want to "experiment" with fish I couldn't predict what their fry would look like.
Half Moon petstore bettas prices aren't that different from a breeder fish. It's best to hold off on buying an impulse fish, get some money for shipping and get a breeder quality betta.
Of course, depending on the breeder and the quality of the fish the price will go up. I just paid $30 for a female, seems like a lot compared to a $3 petstore female but she's from a great line and has fantastic finnage.
So, if you want to line breed or even think you might want to in the furture you have to be selective of the fish you use. If you just want a pet, then you'll be able to find beautiful fish at the stores.
