just to clarify...

If I change my plan entirely and instead of getting tankmates for my birthday we cycle the tank instead...
  • How long before the tank would likely cycle with only one betta in a 10?
  • Is there any other small fish besides Danios that could be added before a cycle?
  • Would Dwarf Lily and Apon. bulbs started in another tank affect the cycle?
  • Would it be safe to ask for gunk from a pet store tank or would that be too risky for its worth as far as diseases and such?
My betta won't even flare at my finger, but I'm not sure I want to chance Danios hurting him.

Plants/ Plant bulbs wont mess your cycle up.

What you could do is ask if the pet shop will give/sell some of their gravel from one of their established tanks..

Danios "SHOULD"be fast enough to Evade the betta.

I know someone with a tank that's at least 55g who would probably take them if we had a problem. I had already considered them as a tankmate since I'm rather partial to the silvery fishies.
