Flaring and Male or Female..?

Alright, So I have been reading other threads and have noticed some people are having trouble sexing their Betta's, but what I am confused about is the flaring and how it can tell you the sex of the fish. Can someone please explain to me the difference in the flare and maybe provide pictures that show the large difference...? Thank you

I think the female betta's flaring is usually a lot smaller than the male bettas.

From what I've read on here - I have no experience with female bettas - when females flare, they don't have a full "beard". Only the sides flare out. Whereas with a male, their beard is all the way around their face, the sides and underneath. But that's just from what I've read, don't take my word for it.

When a male flares you will see his "cheeks" come out and the black Beard shows out
females usually just flare gill "cheek" out

Its better not to rely on the flaring/gills of the fish to sex it. Males and females (minus plakats) are very easy to tell apart. Plakats are larger and have larger tails, usually.

The ovipositor is a better bet for sexing, amongst other things.
