Soft woods like cedar and pine can cause deadly respiratory infections in rats, so do not use them for bedding. I learned this the hard way, because nobody ever told me.

Well THAT'S interesting! What SHOULD be used for bedding?

I use CareFresh, but you can also use aspen or maple or other paper-based bedding.

Ugh I HATED the aspen bedding. It cut up my dwarf hamster when he was just a baby. My mom had me bring him in his carrier to return the bedding and show them just how badly he was hurt.

I wouldn't mind getting another hamster...What I really want though is another dog.

Poor little guy! Yeah I don't really care for the aspen either. My girlrat loves her Carefresh, though, which is the only thing I tried on her so I guess it's lucky she likes it so much. It's what we use at work on our small animals.

I want a dog too =(
Do you need to know about dog food, too, OP?

I am so picky when it comes to dog food. Most brands have the worst stuff. My favorites are cannidae and innova.

I'm really picky too, I've done hours and hours of research! My dog was on Wellness for a little while, but it gives him an upset stomach so I'm in the process of transitioning him to Fromm Four Star, it's got great ingredients, not owned by a larger corporation, and he's doing well on it so far. Hopefully he continues to do well, because I'm sick of researching foods!

I also used Wellness at one point. I have never heard of Fromms, but their website looks amazing. The products page has a delicious looking picture of chicken lol. I only recently (past year) got into my family's dogs' health care. They were eating like purina or something, Eeek! They are much healthier now, their coats are so shiny and they have no more gas! Winnie lets out a little toot sometimes but that is just who she is. Sorry if that is TMI, lol!

Innova and Wellness are good but sooo overpriced. My cats like their canned food, though. I was thinking just general stuff like what are good / bad ingredients, not X brand is superior to Y.
