So, some of you may remember I had a little crowntail named Xander that I got over Christmas (see avatar). He was a great little guy, but a few weeks ago he died from what I now suspect was dropsy. His stomach got HUGE, scales started getting a little raised, and upon doing a necropsy I found nothing but fluid in his abdomen. (I'm a pre-vet bio major, sorry if it bothers, anyone, but I HAD to take a look inside). He got sick and died in a matter of days. It was the weirdest thing because at that point his tank had already been cycled for over a month and a half and ammonia and nitrites were at 0, with low nitrates. **shrugs** I hate to think it's something that I did that caused his death.
But anyway I decided to give it another go, and after getting new substrate and soaking all of Xander's stuff in scolding hot water, I brought home Smaug.
So far he's been doing great, he's MUCH MUCH more active than Xander ever was, making me think he's perhaps healthier (I got Smaug from a different aquarium store that kept their bettas in separate compartments in a filtered and heated aquarium). Xander had constant health issues from the moment I brought him home. However, Smaug has even started what appears to be the beginnings of a bubble nest. Currently, he's flaring at a pepsi can next to his tank.
Hope it goes better for him than it did for my poor little Xander.
