With a small tank like yours, filters like this are the best..

9.99 cheap, has an adjustable flow valve to limit current as well. While it's recommended for 3 gallons and under, I run this baby in my 5 gallon and it has performed flawlessly.

Or the one from fish.com for $2.99 (plus shipping). Basically the same filter - I have one and it works GREAT & it is QUIET!!!

Thanks! I'll look into getting one of those. I've had the filter off for about a day now and he's doing good. :D If I keep him without a filter it's ok to do a 100% water change every week?

Thanks!

It was This One. I still have it. And no it wasn't biofilm. Why would biofilm feel like a light cooking oil all over your fingers? It also was purple like oil under the aquarium lamp. But ever since I removed the filter, it hasn't happened again. That heater, I keep its head as far out of the water as I can because I still don't know if it was the filter or the heater.

I have had that oily stuff too at some point. That heater shouldn't cause oily residue, it is supposed to be submersible. But then again, tetra products are generally crap.
