My little copper "half moon" (aka stump tail).
He had fin rot when I got him, so I did an aquarium salt treatment and his fins started to heal. He is my first half moon, and I couldn't wait for his fins to grow in and be big and beautiful. Then, days after moving him out of his salt treatment and into his new home, I noticed a chunk missing from his tail. The next morning I woke up and saw it absolutely shredded. And that's how it's been ever since. I have done everything I could possibly think of to get him to stop, all to no avail. I've thought about doing another salt treatment just to prevent fin rot and infection, but honestly, if I was going to use salt as a preventative, he'd have to be in it permanently because he simply never stops biting. He's like me when I cut my nails, any sign of regrowth has to be cut off immediately! So for now I am doing three 50% water changes per week on his filtered, fish-in cycling 5 gallon tank. Hopefully that will be enough to keep his woulds clean and infection-free.
He's had a couple other problems, aside from the biting, but those were all taken care of quickly enough. I'm afraid this is just something I'm going to have to deal with permanently.
But I figured, he's still a pretty fish, so I'd like to post pictures of him.
Here he is after his salt treatment, back when I still had hope.
This is when I first saw that he had been biting. I was horrified, but ripped tail aside, I really like this picture:
These are from a few days ago. You can tell there's a little bit of regrowth in the pictures, but it's all gone now: I noticed new tatters and some bloody fins this evening. (Please ignore the water marks on the tank...I'm really bad about cleaning the outsides of my tanks
