betta in new tank

I recently was given the gift of a betta in 1/2 gallon bowl, i've now got acquired a 20 gallon tank that i've setup and had the filter and heater running for a day now.
I also added waterconditioner to the water.
i plan on making it a community tank but for now i want my betta in there.

so my questions are:
1)what temp does he want to be in?
2)how long should i wait to put him in?(regarding tank cycling etc.)

around 78F is fine
It depends, you could do cycling with your betta is in or fishless cycling.

I'd say you can put him in right away. I think it would be better to live in a cycling tank than a half gallon bowl. I cycled my tank with my betta in it.

There's a sticky thread around here somewhere about cycling and google is good too.

My advice is to buy a master test kit and test the ph, ammonia, natrates and nitrites 1 or 2 times a week. And change 20 to 30% of the water twice a week until ammonia and nitrite are at 0 and nitrate is low. This takes 4-6 weeks.

And I'm sure others will give more info or correct mine :)

Temperatures of 78-82F are perfect for bettas, and most other tropical fish.

You could put him in now, just maybe get a test kit (an ammonia one at least - the liquid kind, remember) and make sure the ammonia is very very low. :)

He'll be thrilled to go from a half gallon to a 20 gallon!

Your Betta should love that 20G.I would like to say that as Bettas like hidey-hole places to feel safe, make sure there are places for him to feel secure and get some tall plants (real or fake) to break up the size of the 20G into smaller areas of vision for him.
