Is there any way I can tell for sure? It won't flare at anything, unlike my other males who flare at everything. It didn't even flare at them when the cup was by their tank, or for a mirror.

Just because he won' flare does not make him a female. I have some males that will only flare at other live males and some that will only flare at females while in the spawning tank. Shoot, I've even heard of fish that will only flare at something random like a colored pencil.

When it comes down to it you have to be able to tell by the behavior, structure of the body and fins, and lack of ovaries.

Moot point now since it's definite that this is a male but I didn't want a NOOB reading this and thinking that no flare = girl.

On a related note, I have females that flare all the time and they are most definitely female.
