Water wisteria makes a good plant for new tanks. It doesn't need much in the way of care, and seems to do well in anything from low/high light. Its also Asian, so it fits well with bettas. :) Java fern tied to driftwood is a nice way to go as well. As far as cycling goes, I honestly just use the bettas to cycle new tanks - I've never had a problem with it.

A 10G with just one Betta in it and live plants..don't bother cycling it IMOHO.Just get a liquid water testing kit and keep an eye on the parameters.
Welcome to the forum and good luck with your new fishie friend!

Thanks for the advice about cycling and live plants. I do want to have more than just the betta in the tank, but just him for starters until the plants grow some would be alright.

If I just have the betta and live plants (and a filter of course) it would cycle on its own eventually, correct?

Correct! :) Just do occasional partial water changes to help keep the ammonia down. How often and how much depends on tank size, but my general rule of thumb is about 25% once or twice a week.

Oooh, that sounds so easy. And here I was thinking how I'm going to find ammonia and pull this "really complicated, but not really" cycling thing. It just sounded really overwhelming.

And this also cuts down on Dodo's wait time for the tank. He wiggled like crazy when I took the tank out of the box. I think he knows.
