The gravel is starting to either A, grow some white calcium looking stuff on it. Or B, the gravel was painted or something.

I dont know, this is just discouraging. Im new to keeping fish, and It would be dissapointing to see me lose 2 back to back so fast.
The gravel was painted. I don't use colored gravel because the paint always comes off.

Is that every a problem?

I have a fluval Chi. It uses a carbon filter or some sort of pad in it. The only thing i have added other then the gravel was these tablets the pet store told me to put on top of my fountain which they said is used to house the bennificial bacteria..

To be honest I don't know, but I didn't feel safe with it so I switched to sand.
