Not really sure what's happening to Winslow...

He's starting to miss some scales on the top of his head and under his 'chin' :\

it's the lighter spots on his head and on the left side of his face..
and he's breathing through his mouth, like he's gasping, but he's fine otherwise. I haven't changed anything recently.
I'm just concerned, I'll update tomorrow if anything changes...

My male mustard gas halfmoon is doing the same. But I raised the temp in his home to about 82, stepped up on water changes, I have a 10 gallon, I did weekly 50% water changes, added aquarium salt and it seems to be doing better.

Are you adding any conditioner or dechlorinator to your water?

no, we have used bottled water from the store since we got him (we use it for both fish) because the water from the tap killed our first fish.

It's only happened to Winslow (they're in two separate tanks) but he seems to be the same as before, but he's missing scales.
I don't think he's sick, or at least I hope he's not..

I'm totally not trying to imply that this is the cause for what Winslow is experiencing, but check out "What kind of water do I use for my betta?" from this sticky post: http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/b...are-faq-20058/

You may need to add some conditioner, even to bottled water, to ensure that it has the proper nutrients required. I do wish you and little Winslow the best. :)

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change?ever two weeks 100% water changes, 25% every week only if need be You definately need to do more frequent water changes without a filtered tank. I would do 2 x 50% water changes every week for the size of your tank. Scale problems can also be caused by poor water quality.
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change?
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? none Definitely get some water conditioner and use tap water. Bottled water isn't neccessarily great for bettas as it doesn't have all the minerals they need. There are heavy metals and chlorine in water that are harmful to fish, which is why water conditioner is a must. Tap water really needs it to get the chlorine out. That may have been your problem before.

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters? Get a liquid test kit so you have an idea the quality of your water. Poor water quality causes health problems. Test the tap water with the liquid test kit and I'm sure it'll be ok.

I know it seems like I'm on a rant about things but there are some basic things you need to help keep your betta healthy and prevent problems. You've probably just been lucky to this point. Good luck!
